Thinking About Trying Yoga? Start Here.

Maybe you’ve been thinking about trying yoga for a while. Maybe someone has told you it would be good for your flexibility, strength or stress. Or maybe you’re simply looking for a way to move your body and feel a little better.

But then come the questions.

What if I’m not flexible? What if I don’t know any of the poses? What should I bring? What class should I take? Will everyone else know what they’re doing?

If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially when it seems like everyone else already knows the ropes.

Here’s what we want you to know: you don’t need to prepare for yoga before you come to yoga.

You don’t need to be flexible

This might be the biggest misconception about yoga. Flexibility isn’t a prerequisite. In fact, improving mobility and flexibility is one of the reasons many people begin practicing in the first place.

Every body moves differently, and yoga isn’t about making your body look a certain way in a pose. It’s about learning how to move, breathe and pay attention to what feels right for your body.

You don’t need to know what you’re doing

Really.

Our teachers will guide you through class, and there is no expectation that you know the names of poses or understand yoga terminology when you arrive.

You can watch the teacher or the people around you. You can take a break. You can modify something that doesn’t feel right. You can spend half the class figuring it out.

That all counts.

Choosing your first class

There isn’t one perfect first yoga class. The best place to start depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want something slower and quieter, a Yin, Yin Flow, or Slow Flow practice may feel good. If you enjoy movement and want to build strength, you might prefer a Slow & Strong, Yoga Fusion, Barre or Power Flow class. And if you’d like more time to learn the foundations of yoga, a beginner-focused series can be a great place to begin and we hold those twice a year.

Not sure? Reach out. Tell us a little about yourself and what you’re looking for, and we’re always happy to help you choose.

What to bring

You really don’t need much.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, bring some water and a yoga mat if you have one (we have studio mats available as well). Arrive a few minutes early so you have time to get settled and let your teacher know it’s your first class.

Most importantly, bring yourself as you are.

There is no “good at yoga”

Yoga is a practice. That means there is always something to learn, whether it’s your first class or you’ve been practicing for years.

Some days you might feel strong. Some days you might feel wobbly. Sometimes your mind will wander through your entire class. Sometimes you’ll leave feeling completely different than when you walked in.

There’s room for all of it.

At The Yoga Space, connection is at the heart of everything we do. We want this to be a place where you can move, breathe, learn and feel part of a community, without needing to be anything other than exactly where you are today.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to try yoga, this is your invitation.
